Shop drawings are documents that are created specifically for diverse building components (steel or metal in our case) and are meant to be a lot more detailed and accurate thus fabricators and erectors can have a clear understanding of what needs to be done in the shop and how to put it all together on construction site. On the other hand construction documents correlate broadly to the structure as a whole.

So what do steel detailers do and what make a good structural steel detailer or any type of detailer for that matter.
In this day and age with internet and thousands of other sources of information it is rather easy to learn a software or acquire information on how to become a detailer but what a lot of people in construction industry fail to understand is that by learning a software or watching videos online won't make you a true professional in this field but only makes you a drafter.
What makes a true professional detailer is combined knowledge in engineering, architecture, fabrication and erection procedures, familiarity with tools and machinery that will be used to fabricate and erect various parts of the structure as well as how they will be delivered to construction site.
While deep knowledge of the software is a crucial aspect of detailing and is necessary in order to integrate all of the information acquired prior it isn't useful on its own.
